Edvard Munch is Norway's most famous artist. Known for his painting called The Scream, his many other artworks never gained the same fame as The Scream outside of Norway. Born in 1863, his artistic career took him to Paris and Berlin as was the custom for artists at the turn of the century. Munch's greatest works were created when he returned to Norway in 1910. He did not marry or have children so his artwork was left to Norway's capitol city of Oslo when he died. The Scream painting has been stolen twice from the museum in Norway where it was displayed; once in 1994 and again in 2004. Both times the painting was recovered.
